My Opinion on iPads at School by: Y

My school, Durham Academy, has been using iPads for the first time. Through the five weeks that I’ve been at school, I’ve had some very mixed feelings. I definitely have enjoyed not having to lug atound as many books, but if you forget your iPad, I could get lunch detention  for either being late or not having my materials. iPads are pretty cool especially in the organization category. If you are pretty organized like me, you don’t necessarily need the Reminders app, but even if you are organized it is still a great app. Evernote is an okay app too. You can look at your teacher’s shared folders and see your assignments. Unfortunately, all of the teachers weren’t so prepared for the iPads. So, overall, I think there are positives and negatives to getting this device.

Let’s get things straight, in the last few weeks of school here, we’ve had the incredible iPads. This is good and bad. The good news is, there are way less books, which is good because before, I swear I was lifting my weight in books! Most days I couldn’t even get my bag up the stairs. We also use Evernote which rocks, no more paper notes! I can take them all down there and they’re organized in notebooks for each subject. In addition I never lose stuff anymore, it’s all on the iPad. Also, lets say I got sick, I can get almost all of my homework from Evernote. Now for the bad news, we don’t have Adobe Flash, so like half of the awesome sneaky things that can save you if you lose your textbook are unusable! Here’s something that’s super annoying: so your sitting in class and you’re doing your work and beep beep, the kid next to Reminders App goes off! It’s so loud, just mute it already, it’s getting old. Oh, and some teachers have exiled iPads! Can you believe that? They tell you to write down your homework and then you can’t use them at all. Look around you, there is technology everywhere people, use it! To sum it up iPads are pretty awesome, just get out of our way and let us use them!

iPads, A Miracle For Education By Halsey Z.

I am currently going to Durham Academy, (2012-2013) and we are testing if a new The iPad is the best thing that has happened to our generation and how we learn. The iPads keep us organized with Calendar and Reminders. It has also kept us well educated with all of the educational, school-friendly apps the school has bought. I think it was a very creative and genius idea to adopt the new technology into our daily school basis. I think that every schools should start using some device of technology. It makes learning easier and fun.

I Use iPads: Shaboom! by Will C.

My iPad experience currently is fine, but there are some ups and downs to this cool device. One problem is that when teachers give me more several things to do or add on to my iPad, it gets a little difficult to keep up with all of my assignments. Another thing that is a little disadvantage is that if you lose or break your iPad unless you are syncing your data to your online Evernote account. Using apps like Pages and forgetting to put your documents in Evernote can spell disaster if you lose your device!

One thing I wish we didn’t have is that some teachers are still using binders. Now all of my binders are really bulky and it’s really hard to fit them in my back pack. But, as far as I’m concerned, I think everything with the iPad is going great. I can’t wait until we can download apps of our own and have some more fun!

I Use iPads To… by Imani S.

My experience with the iPad has been AWESOME!!!! The device keeps me organized, for example, I use the Reminders App to remind me of my homework. I can set it to ding to let me know when to .et to work. I usually schedule it to go off at tutorial. When I’m done, there’s this little box next to my homework, and when I click it, it puts a check mark to let me know that I’m done. I also feel more organized because I’m carrying around fewer books. I also like the iPad, because when my family is on our home computer having my own iPad comes in handy. I don’t have to share it! Also, I use the Evernote app which lets me see all the homework I need to do for each class as well as the handouts I need. I also like the iPad, because it saves paper. The iPad is a great learning device, because I can carry it around everywhere I go. Unlike a laptop, it doesn’t hurt my arms and if fits into my bookbag or shoulder bag. That’s why I love the iPad.

To Have iPads, Or to Not by Sarah F.

In my personal opinion, at Durham Academy, the answer to this controversial question is clear. The iPads are a distraction and make things more complicated. If we already had an organized campus, why change it to be technology savvy? And if we really want the iPads, make everything iPads, not just half of what we do. Some teachers use them a lot, others not very much. Despite many efforts, our backpacks are not any lighter. Yes, the number of binders have decreased, but that’s only because we put all the things that should be in small, separate binders together in huge binders. Now my papers are more disorganized, confusing, and having iPads in addition to binders costs lots of money. In my opinion, iPads are a bad idea unless you go 100%!

Are iPads a Problem? By Dianne K.

I am a student at Durham Academy and a big change happened at our school this year. Everyone at the Durham Academy Middle School, each got their own iPad!
I personally think it is a good way to stay organized. But one part of my brain thinks it is a distraction for many kids. If you are using it for an educational purpose, such as taking notes, writing homework, or completing homework, it is a good tool. But if you are using it as a toy, such as playing games, taking silly pictures, or doing anything inappropiate, I think it as a distraction.
Our school technology department has already put restrictions to the iPads and put only educational purposed apps, which is good. But other people have still found out a way to use it as a toy. The apps I like are the ‘Reminders’ for writing down homework, ‘Evernote’ for writing down notes, and ‘Brainpop’ for fun but educational videos about any subject in school. These apps can help you get organized and learn. Overall, these iPads can be good or bad, it depends on how you use it.

iPads. Good or Bad. By Dan C.

I know it is a privilege for our school to give us iPads, but a bunch of kids are getting very distracted by them. Many kids are playing on apps, drawing pictures, and talking with friends about the stuff they did while the teacher is trying to teach. It is also difficult to be more careful with the iPad. It is very nice that we are able to have iPads, but it has made me a lot more disorganized with my notes in Evernote. It is very confusing to find all of the notes I’ve taken in each class. It is nice having the iPad, but it makes school for me more difficult.

iPads good, or bad? By Katie K.

For me, the iPads help with my learning. The most helpful app on the iPad is Evernote. On Evernote I like how the teachers can share documents with you and how you can make separate notebooks for each of the classes. Instead of using an assignment notebook like last year, I use an app called “Reminders”. The bad thing about the iPads is that on some nights, I forget to charge it. I usually have enough battery for the next day, but in eighth grade they may use their iPads more than we do now. I have also forgotten to bring my iPad to school a couple of times. Some days it is just one more thing you need to worry about, others days it is so helpful and fun to use.

This year during 2012-2013 year, my school, Durham Academy, bought iPads for every student. This technology is supposed to help us have a better academic year. I believe that the iPads have helped me quite a bit through the first five weeks of school. For example, after the school day ended last year, I usually carried an average of 20 pounds of books and notebooks home with me each day. Now my book bag is much lighter! Also, one of the major advantages is that I don’t lose my materials very easily. In order to lose all of my work, I would have to lose the actual ipad itself. Even then, my work would not be gone because it is stored in the cloud through an app called Evernote. It has also helped me because I don’t need to bring a binder to all of my classes. Instead I have all my notes online in Evernote or on my iPad. Having an iPad, One of the disadvantages is that I have to plug it in every night. If I forget to plug it in, my battery dies. Also another complaint is sometimes my brother or sister mistakes it as their  iPad and they don’t return it. The next morning is chaos because I can’t find my iPad. Maybe at some point we can use our own cases to help us distinguish. This year some of the teachers haven’t used the iPad that much. That really does irritate me because I feel like I’m stuck in the past, hopeless, weighed down with textbooks, binders, erasers, and pencils. But so far this year I’m loving the iPads.
