2022-23 School Year

Welcome new sixth graders! We are starting the year off as if everything is back to normal! The pandemic really set us back for a few years. Some of us are still wearing masks but we are able to be in school full time and have masks optional policies. We are staying healthy! Our sixth grade class was able to take an overnight trip to Camp Hanes nestled in the NC Mountains (first overnight trip in 2 1/2 years!) Below is one of many photos taken. We are kicking off the year with a new set of blog posts. Please check out the blog roll in the side bar to see what my students are writing about so far this year.

Blogging 2020-2021

A big welcome to the sixth grade class of 2021-2022! For some of you, this will be the first time that you have had the opportunity to manage your very own blog! I invite you to take advantage of your worldwide audience and write about topics that really interest you! I hope that you will enjoy sharing and connecting through your posts with other students your age. Have fun and put forth your best!

Check out our Student Blogs!

By scrolling through the blog roll on this site, you are able to access each of the individual student blogs written by my students this year. They are a very talented group with lots of great stories to share. I encourage you to leave some comments and let them know what you think about their posts! Have fun!

The Viper

This is the Viper, it is in Lydia World, NC.  You stand up on this steel coaster and spiral up a fast track, then shoot down 90 degrees. You are caught by two bumps, and hit by a loop. By now you should be feeling sick (g-force 1), but you are not even close to the end of the 450 foot long ride! You head upwards again and go out onto a broken track. After holding there for 20 seconds, you are shot backwards and down a drop underground. The track curves upwards out of the dark, and stops you at the top. But don’t get out! The ride isn’t over. The track races you to the end at 200 mph. Your car starts rushing towards the next ride at an unstoppable speed. Luckily it swerves right on time and comes to a quick halt. The ride is over, and the other car begins to climb the upward spiral…..

The Nightmare By Dan C.

The Nightmare

The Nightmare is the scariest roller coaster ever! It will leave you screaming and crying everywhere. This daredevil roller coaster has many inverts and drops throughout the record breaking 2 miles. This coaster also travels at 125 mph. Let me describe it to you. First you start by riding to the top of the whole ride. Almost every person closes their eyes on this terrifying 200 foot 90 degree drop down to the earth. Once you realize you aren’t going straight down, you are upside down on the first breathtaking invert. Giving you a break, you ride up a hill to an other drop. This drop is not too high, but you are going more than 90 degrees on the drop. Using its speed, the cart flies up the second of five inverts. It travels up a huge mountain that drops you down to the earth and sending you up to the first Whirlpool. You drop down and fly up and over a quick drop. Riding up the second Whirlpool is long but worth the excitement. You ride down and have a very, very, very long trip up to one of its scary drops. This drop gets the record for the highest G-force which is 7Gs. You ride over a small drop and zoom toward the third inversion on the ride. You don’t even realize that you are already one the fifth invert and the ride is over. This coaster is located in the Bahamas. It is made of all steel and is very smooth riding and quiet. Thank you for riding.

‘How to talk to your teen’ advice

In the book Cosmic, Liam Digby refers to his father’s copy of “How to Talk to Your Teen” in order to act like a grown up. I have added an extra chapter to his book!

Here is my advice that should be in talk to your teen:

You don’t need to check on your teen while they are doing homework: they may not be, but they will still get it done, they don’t want to go to school without it. Sometimes it is better to let them find their own way of working. If it’s doing their homework all night, and playing games, or texting all day, then let them do it.

Make a reward system: good grades=new phone, etc. remind them that good behavior is rewarded, and bad is not. Give them opportunities to fix mistakes, assign a punishment then tell them how they withdraw it.

NASA

In class we are reading the book Cosmic. We doing some space related activities. One is writing about the NASA site and some things that are going on in space. Here are five things that I find very interesting.

  • One fact is in 2012 we lost the first man and the first woman that walked on the moon.
  • We have landed the rover on mars called curiosity. This rover is sending back pictures and soil samples.
  • In the North Pole and South Pole we are loosing more and more ice. The sheets that were once there are now disappearing. We have lost three times as much ice as in the 1990’s
  • On December 12, 2012 astronomers have uncovered previously unseen seven primitive galaxys that have formed more that 13 billion years ago.
  • NASAS space craft messenger has found ice on mercury. Data shows that if the ice spreads to the size of Washington, D.C. The ice will be 2 miles thick.

These are some facts that I found really interesting.

Roller Coaster

We are reading the book Cosmic in Language Arts. The main character LOVES roller coasters, so for class we were assigned to sketch a Roller Coaster and write a description about what it would be.

Here is the sketch of The Certain Doom

The new Roller Coaster, The Certain Doom has just been opened to the public! Its theme is what you might think, how close you can come to CERTAIN DOOM without dying. I am so excited, after all I will be the first person to be able to go on it. Apparently, The Certain Doom itself is 1200 feet long and at its highest it is 500 feet tall. The engineer of the coaster says that certain parts of the ride can go up to 151 miles per hour, making it the fastest ride in the world. Although this raises questions about its safety, the manager of the ride reassured everyone that every probable outcome has been accounted for in the design. However, it is not recommended to go on the ride if you have a preexisting heart problem. Now, to the ride itself. The entire ride is electric powered and the “car” is stuck to the tunnel so you can actually control which speed you want to go.. The steepest drop during the ride is a 80° angle, and half the ride is spent upside down. While you are upside down, there are four corkscrews so it might be wise not to eat anything before you ride. I hope you enjoy this new ride. I know I will!

The Nasher Museum

At the Nasher Museum we visited three interesting exhibits. My favorite was the Cone Sisters’ collection. They had many, beautiful paintings by amazing artists. I could never imagine having so much art in my house! I think my favorite paintings were ones by Pierre Renoir, I like the way he paints very detailed, but his paintings same very vague at the same time. I really enjoyed the Nasher Museum visit.
