How to talk to your teen

In the book Cosmic, Liam reads a book titled, How to Talk to Your Teen. I am adding a chapter to his book.

Dear parents with a child at the age of 11-19 with school issues, here is some advice for you!

1. Talk to them and see what’s exactly happening but refrain from yelling.

2. Talk to your child’s teachers to see what advice they have.

3. Take action! Here are the following things to help your teen through different school issues:

Homework: If they have trouble with keeping track of their homework, then get them a homework folder this way the can easily open the folder grab there homework and turn it in.

Studying for quizzes, tests, midterms, and exams : get a calendar and write when they have a quiz, test, midterm and exam then ask the what’s going tho be on it then start studying 2-3 days ahead for quizzes, 4-5 days ahead for tests, 6-7 days for midterms, and 8-9 days for exams.

Grades: When a student gets a low report card grade, they get nervous about parent reactions. When you get the report and one or more of the grades are below a B-, don’t yell at them.  Just talk to them about your concerns and you can raise your voice some, but the main thing is to try to help them with the problems explained in the teacher comment. Then, talk to the teacher about your concerns and what to do to help them get through.

(If you don’t see a positive change in your teen’s grades, resort to plan B below and continue to do the the advice above.)

Plan B: Threaten to take away your teen’s phone or any other devices. Force your teen to talk to his teacher during free time instead of hanging out with friends to get exact advice. Have him write down the teacher’s advice so you have a copy to work with. Go down the list and check off what has been taken care of and make sure your teen does all the teacher’s recommendations until you see a change. If not, threaten a grounding to get them to do the recommendations.

4. Continue to work with your teen on any projects and give them advice if they need it. ( If the advice given resolves any conflicts continue do to the items above).
