On Tuesday the sixth grade went to Duke University Nasher Museum. One of the collectors I was interested in was Jason Rubell. One of the first paintings we looked at was one that Rubell bought when he was thirteen years old. Here are some facts about Jason and his collection.
Jason’s parents started collecting art early in their marriage and made Jason and his sister a part of collecting art. Jason is very passionate about contemporary art. When he speaks about it he laughs and smiles and gets animated. The first art work in Jason’s collection wasn’t one he purchased, it was gifted to him. Jason’s parents ordered him to collect brochures from galleries they visited. When Jason was young, he learned that when looking at and talking about art, kids could have opinions and ideas that could stand alongside those of adults. Jason told stories of his parents bribing him and his sister with treats to go to galleries without complaining. Jason’s parents asked him what he thought about what he saw and what it meant to him. Our trip to The Duke University Nasher Museum was very interesting and the art we saw was very nice.
