My Wisdom Tale- Lydia R.

Silk of generosity

There once was a kind, generous man. The man had barely any food, he had no home, and he wore rags. Though he had nothing, he shared the apples he picked, and the fish he caught with all the village.

Meanwhile, a rich man, clothed in silk, heard of this man everywhere, of his acts of kindness and giving. He was all everyone talked about. They spoke of him like a god, someone they worshipped. The rich man grew jealous. The rich man evicted the poor man, and said he was never to return to the village, that way he would return to his original fame.

The villagers found out, and grew angry at the rich. Shopkeepers would not sell him goods. People stopped going to his stores and services. People turned their heads away when he came.

After many days, the rich man could not take the cruelty of the village’s hate. He traveled long and hard, to find the poor man. Finally, he found the man, and asked him, “Why are you, a poor man wearing nothing but rags, so popular, and loved, while I wear silk and fine cloth, but I am hated and shamed?” The poor man replied, “Because you wear fine silks, but are covered in the dirt of greed. I wear poor rags, but am dressed in the silk of generosity.”

Who’s Dream is This? By Madison K.

The first day when Ms.Williams told us that we were going to make a comic using Adobe Photoshop and Comic Life. I started thinking of all the things stories from our Wisdom Tales book (by Heather Forrest) that I could use then I knew right away to do “Who’s Dream is this?”  I also thought it was going to be really easy. But, once we started learning to use all of the tools in Photoshop and Comic Life 2 I realized that it was going to be harder than I thought. So started and it was really hard to make it just right. Here is the result. I hope you enjoy reading it!

My Visit to the Nasher Museum and Matisse by Sarah F.

Recently, my school went to the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. I found out about this extremely interesting artist from the early 1900s late 1800s. This artist was Matisse. Many of Matisse’s paintings were in the Nasher Museum of Art. I went on the Internet and found out that Henri Matisse was born on December 31, 1869. I also learned that the Cone sisters, Etta and Clarabell, and Gertrude Stein were great contributors in the rising of Matisse’s fame. Matisse was a strange child and wasn’t extremely smart. When he was a child, his father hd very high expectations, which he could rarely meet. Matisse was married for 41 years before he got divorced only for his want to stand alone. Matisse met his wife for the very last time in 1939 only to talk about the separation. Matisse only started painting when he was 20 years old, but instantly fell in love. During World War 2, Matisse’s world basically fell apart, his health, his marriage, everything. Matisse sculpted, but didn’t feel as comfortable as he did when he was on a canvas.

I got my information from http://topics.nytimes.com/ topics/reference/timestopics/people/m/henri_matisse /index.html

I am thankful for

As I go through life, I don’t really think about what it would be like if I lived in a mud hut with no electricity or running water or if I lived in a neighborhood where there were gangs, and if I went to a bad school where there were only disruptive kids in the class. So I think that it is a good thing to look back every once in a while to reflect on the blessings and really think about it.

The first thing I would like to give thanks for is my family. Some kids don’t have a mom or dad or uncles or aunts. My life would not be as good as it is now, or anywhere near as good if somebody in my family got killed of left. It makes me sad even to think about that happening. Sometimes I need a loving family to support me when things get rough. I also need a sibling to play with. And I need uncles and aunts to have fun with and grandparents to talk with.

Second, I would like to give thanks for living where I live. Everybody in my community is very nice and supporting. If I did not live where I live now, I probably would not go to such a good school and I wouldn’t have as good friends as I do. Also, I wouldn’t deliver the bread that I deliver on Saturdays and I wouldn’t mow people’s lawns. Doing that is important to me because first of all I make money doing it and second of all if I didn’t do it I would just be a lazy slob who lies around the house all day.

And last I would like to give thanks for my school. My school teaches me things that I will need later in life. It also challenges me to do my best work and be the best person socially and academically that I could be. It also teaches me the skills that I will need to get in to the colleges I want to go to like Stanford or Duke. If I can get into one of those colleges then I will get a god job and have enough money to live a happy and productive life.

So in conclusion, I think it is a great thing to look back and write down what I am thankful for so when I feel like things are are really bad, I can just read this page and just think about what it would be like if I didn’t have these things.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving was really awesome because it was also my grandpa’s birthday so we got to eat cake. It was a pretty awesome day. By the way, my grandpa flies planes. My grandma made a lot of food like turkey, stuffing and all that good stuff. It was his 80th birthday! So his cake was specially designed by a friend. I took a picture of it below. What do you think? It was made out of rice crispy treats and icing I think.  Of course it was on a cake. The cake was delicious. But I don’t know if we are going to eat the plane I am pretty sure we won’t.

While we were at my grandma’s and grandpa’s we played some pool, drove around the go cart and the golf cart. We also played some badminton and played with my aunts dogs Oddella and old Jessey. We had some frisbee and football passing too, but that is not related to Thanksgiving.

What I am Thankful For by Madison

There are somethings I just can’t live without but thankful for them. I am very thankful for my friends because they are always there for me. These friends of mine can see my true colors. Also, I am thankful for family because they love me and take good care of me. I am thankful for just being fortunate enough to attend DA because it’s a great school. These are the most wonderful things in my life that I am thankful for and glad that I have.

Halloween By: Luci J.

It is Halloween and you see many gouls and ghosts but something looks just a little out of place. So you decide to delve a little deeper in to this mystery (you have always been a one for mysteries). Slowly you creep up to the little man with the baggy pants and the black hat on his head and (being a curious person) you pop up in front of the little man and gently poke at this weird persons face and the person who you now realize is a girl gives you a weird look and starts to walk away with her friends. I am proud to say this little man is me.

For Halloween I dressed up as world famous Charlie Chaplin. Charlie Chaplin was a movie genius and though he had an irascible personality he always seemed to hit the funny bone in everyone. For my costume I went to good will and found some baggy pants and a white shirt. I got a good mustache (100% hair…ewww) and some white makeup. Put it all together and voila a Charlie Chaplin (almost).

I am not nearly as good as Charlie Chaplin but hey I got some weird kid to poke my face maybe I am the tiniest bit successful.

Magic Everywhere By Madison K.

Country-of-elves---Aurora-B

Magic is every where you cannot hear and can not be seen,

but you feel it in the breeze and in the rustles of the trees.

Magic turns and drifts away,

Never knowing where it will go next

People may just want it to stay, but it never goes their way,

This magic always has special effects but it’s complex,

Magic is in our heart,

In the air we breath,

There is just one thing we don’t know about magic,

Is where it might be?????

It’s just tragic!

That’s just magic.

Skim-boarding Success by Tanner

Skim boarding success

By: Tanner

So the day before the hurricane hit, I was still on the beach looking for the perfect patch of water to skimboard on. Many people would had already evacuated Cape Hatteras, but not us. When I hit that perfect wave at the perfect time, I did the two tricks I had been wanting to do since I started skim-boarding. maybe I did two tricks I had always wanted to do. The first trick was when I hit a wave and was able to spin the board in a 360 degree turn underneath me. I actually accomplished that trick twice. I also completed a trick where I spun the board 180 degrees with my back foot but left my front foot on the board. The board was backwards while I faced forward and balanced on one foot. I did this, quite surprisingly, a number of times. Here is an illustration I made of the tricks below. If you ever get a chance to go skim boarding, especially right before a hurricane, you will definitely have a blast.

Seasons By Madison K.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/momofone98/224070903/sizes/s/in/photostream/

A breeze,

In the season,

Helps weather turn cold,

The leaves on the trees,

Go red, orange, gold,

Pumpkins are picked,

Cranberries served,

Winged insects,

Fly south,

As do some birds.

Reptiles slow,

Getting ready for rest,

Hibernation in winter,

When they rest best…

It comes after summer,

Before winter’s freeze,

Winter

Coldest season of all,

If you’re looking for a reason,

Skiing sledding,

Leafless trees,

Skate on ice,

No sign of bees…

The Earth has tilted,

From the sun,

Days are short,

But still such fun,

Put some gloves,

On your hands,

Enjoy the winter wonderland!

Spring has now sprung!

It’s sprung!

It’s spring!

What’s this season gonna’ bring?

Bursting buds,

A waterfall,

Warmer weather,

That’s not all,

Younglings everywhere,

Birds and bees,

Take to air,

Spring is here,

Spring has sprung…

It’s Summer time,

Sun is strong,

It’s Summer time,

Days are long,

It’s Summer time,

Out of school,

It’s Summer time,

Swim in pool,

It’s Summer time,

Sun is near,

It’s Summer time,

Leaves on trees,

It’s Summer time,

Frogs and bees,

It’s Summer time,

After spring,

It’s Summer time,

Birds do sing,

Summer comes,

Before the fall,

My favorite season,

Of them all!
