In Mrs.Williams 6th grade Durham Academy Language Arts class, the students created books about there hero, or heroine, someone that has made a positive impact int there lives. For example, this book was made by an eleven year old girl named Yaa Baker. It is about her mother who is an Academic Dean at Duke University, however Yaa’s focus seemed to be morse on her moms’ teaching at North Carolina Central University. In person, the art work of this book, and many others, are even more extravagant. They each have a special scene with the hero inside the pop out portal. Although these 6th graders are extremely smart and designed the books entirely themselves, they did have the help of an artist in residence, Peg Gignoux. We Couldn’t have done without Ms. Gignoux, Mrs. Williams, the parents who bought the materials, and most importantly, our heroes, the true foundation for this whole project.
