Henri Matisse by Will Car

When my school and I went to the Nasher Museum Of Art I saw many works of art by Henri Matisse. I liked his work so I decided to write this blog about him.

Henri spent his childhood in a two room house. His father, Émile was a grain merchant and his mother Anna Heloise Gerard, ran the house paints section of her husbands shop. Apparently this inspired Henri. Henri was a dreamy, frail and not bright child. He grew up in nearby Bohain-en-Vermandois, an industrial textile center, until the age of ten, when his father sent him to St. Quentin for lycée. He began to paint in 1889, when his mother had brought him art supplies during the period of convalescence.

Henri’s mother was the first to advise him not to go by the rules of art.
Matisse began painting still-lives and landscapes in the traditional Flemish style, at which he achieved reasonable proficiency. When Matisse married Amélie in January 1898, they had been introduced only three months after.
In 1902 disaster struck. Amélie’s parents were disgraced and financially ruined in a spectacular scandal of national scope, as the unsuspecting employees of a woman whose financial empire was based on fraud. Many of his finest works were created in this period, when he was an active part of the great gathering of artistic talent in Montparnasse.

I think Henri Matisse was a very interesting person. His art is good.

My source was very helpful. It explained Henri’s life very well.
