At Durham Academy, we went to the Nasher museum in Durham and explored the collection of art at the Nasher. Imagine looking at works of art that are basically a collage. Pieces of random things put on and then taken off to make a pretty design with faded letters, lines, and shapes. That’s the work of Mark Bradford. Mr. Bradford studied at the California Institution of Art and won many awards including : Busksbaum Award in 2006, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award in 2003, Joan Mitchell Foundation Award and many more other awards. He has paintings in many museums other than the Nasher like : Sao Paulo Biennial, ARCO 2003 and many more other museums. Mr. Bradford does HUGE paintings like the “A Truely Rich Man is one Whose Children Run into his Arms Even When His Hands Are Empty” which was almost nine feet wide and nine feet tall. On June 11, 2011 was featured in an eight page article as a artist. Right now, he lives in Los Angeles, California. He was my favorite artist in the museum because I love his way of taking random stuff, sticking them to a paper and making a design out of it by peeling off some of the content. Usually, when people put stuff in a collage, they keep it the way it is after piling the last bit of stuff, but Mark Bradford goes beyond and peeled stuff off and made the painting have different texture and feeling. That’s why I love his work.
